âSo, whatâs it like living with a woman?â Miller asked as he handed Parker a beer. They were sitting in Jacksonâs living room, eagerly waiting for their pizza delivery.
âTwo, heâs living with two women. Donât forget Abby,â Croix said.
âActually, three, if you count Charlie,â Eric added.
âMath geniuses, all of you,â Jackson said.
âWell, since Abbyâs seventeen and Charlieâs his daughter, that leaves Rica. So, back to my original and correct question, whatâs it like living with a woman?â the lawyer asked.
âYou should know. Youâre living with one, too,â Parker pointed out before taking a sip of his beer. He didnât know where Miller was going with this line of questioning, but until he did, he wouldnât say anything that may incriminate him later.
âYes, but my situationâs different. Iâll be putting a ring on her finger.â
âAnd youâre getting regular sex,â Eric said.
âNot just at home either,â Croix complained. âWith both of them at Fortress, Iâve started to carry disinfectant wipes around the office with me. Why, just last week, I walked into the kitchen andââ Croix stopped, closed his eyes, and shivered. âI just wanted a cup of coffee, man. It took days before I could look Wren in the eyes again.â Croix looked embarrassed, but Miller looked pleased with himself and his situation.
Parker was happy for him. Miller and Wren had kept their relationship a secret, so Parker didnât know many details about their courtship, but they had all been there when Wren had broken it off. It had devastated Miller.
âSo, spill,â Eric said to Parker.
âThereâs not much to tell, sorry. It was bumpy at first, everyone getting used to each other and dealing with Charlie, but weâre in a good routine. Itâs not easy, though, and most days are crazy. Between working for Handi Andi during the day and now at the Galley several nights a week, Iâd be lost without Rica and Abby. Theyâve gone above and beyond what weâd agreed to, especially Rica.â
âWell, I hope youâve been saying thank you,â Croix said.
âWhy?â Parker sat forward. âHas she said anything?â
âNah, not to me, and not to Wren, either, I donât think. Iâm closest to the receptionistâs desk, so I hear more than I want,â Croix explained.
âNothing to me, either,â Miller said.
âGood. Thatâs good.â Parker leaned back in his chair and looked at the ceiling. âItâs hard, though. Donât get me wrong. I love Charlie and I donât blame her for any of this, but I really miss my old life. I miss the travel and the rush of following a lead. Writing and deadlines. A good nightâs sleep. My boat. A decent paycheck. So far, Iâm making ends meet and saving up to move out, but Andi told me today sheâd be cutting my hours starting next week, because of the cold weather slump. It would be easier if I could find an actual job with benefits that didnât involve an hour commute.â
âHave you had any offers?â Jackson asked.
âYes, but with the commute, Iâd hardly see Charlie during the week.
